1. Scope

A child is anyone under the age of 18. This policy applies to all staff, volunteers, trustees, and contractors who may come into contact with children through The Healing Hubs' activities.

While our primary service users are adults, children may be present at community events or as family members of people we support.

2. Types of abuse

Physical abuse — including hitting, shaking, burning, or causing physical harm.

Emotional abuse — including persistent emotional ill-treatment that causes severe and persistent adverse effects on a child's emotional development.

Sexual abuse — including any sexual activity involving a child.

Neglect — including persistent failure to meet a child's basic physical and psychological needs.

Online abuse — including cyberbullying, grooming, or exploitation via digital channels.

3. Recognising signs of abuse

Signs may include unexplained injuries, behavioural changes, inappropriate sexual knowledge, poor hygiene, or a child appearing hungry, tired, or unkempt.

A child may also disclose abuse directly. If a child discloses to you, listen carefully, do not promise confidentiality, and report to the DSL immediately.

4. Reporting procedure

Any concern about a child must be reported to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) immediately.

Record what you have seen or heard factually. Do not investigate the concern yourself or confront the alleged abuser.

The DSL will assess the concern and decide whether to refer to Children's Social Care or the police.

In an emergency, call 999. For non-emergency concerns, contact your local Children's Social Care team or the NSPCC helpline on 0808 800 5000.

5. Safe recruitment

All staff and volunteers who work with or may come into contact with children are subject to an enhanced DBS check before starting their role.

References are obtained and verified for all new staff and volunteers.

6. Photography and social media

Photographs of children may only be taken with the explicit written consent of a parent or guardian.

Images of children must never be shared on social media or used in any publication without appropriate consent.
